Oceans Of Mercy

Oceans of Mercy

Oceans of Mercy was established in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic that is devastating the continent of Africa.  Oceans’ emphasis is three-fold:  1) caring for orphans and vulnerable children; 2) providing HIV intervention and life skills training for people living with HIV, and 3) Basic education and life skills training.  The Oceans of Mercy Children’s Village in Port Elizabeth is now home to 19 previously abandoned children.  Oceans also has a strong presence in the local community through several outreach programs:  Lubabalo:  a community health worker training program; and Choose Life:  an HIV/AIDS awareness and abstinence program directed at local high schools in the Motherwell and Markman Townships.

Thembelani, South Africa

A letter from Thembelani, 16 year-old AIDS orphan from South Africa, to his sponsor in Shawnee, Kansas:

“You know people like you come one in a lifetime; that’s why I feel so blessed to know you.  To me you are like a shining star that shines for us.  You are like that—protect and guide us. Before I knew you, we were not happy like the other kids, but now we eat normal like the other kids do.  We have smile on our face when I play with my brothers and my sisters.  I can see them smile—that’s a warm feeling seeing your family smile.”
